Statement on Senate Transportation Committee Passage of HB 19 by Leach

Senate Sponsor: Larry Taylor

AUSTIN—The Keep Texas Trucking Coalition (KTTC) today released the following statement regarding the passage of House Bill 19 by the Senate Transportation Committee on a unanimous, bipartisan vote:

Today’s unanimous favorable vote by the Senate Transportation Committee further proves that House Bill 19 is good, common sense, bipartisan governance at work. The Texas Legislature has continued to recognize the serious existential threat abusive commercial vehicle litigation poses to Texas small businesses, while also valuing the need for injured Texans to be compensated fairly when harmed by the negligence of others.

We are grateful for the leadership of Transportation Committee Chairman Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) and Senator Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood), the Senate sponsor of HB 19, who—with House author Jeff Leach (R-Plano)—helped negotiate a bill that has broad support in the Legislature that reflects the universal business support for this legislation throughout Texas.

The bipartisan vote by the Senate Transportation Committee echoes the strong bipartisan support for this bill in the House, including Rep. Leo Pacheco (D-San Antonio)—who signed early as a coauthor—Rep. Eddie Lucio III (D-San Antonio) and Rep. Ina Minjarez (D-San Antonio), who worked with Chairman Leach on amendments to the bill, and all of the Democratic members whose input and favorable votes helped move HB 19 to where it is today.

We look forward to seeing House Bill 19 on the Senate floor soon.

With nearly 600 members spanning businesses and associations of all sizes across nearly every sector of the Texas economy, the Keep Texas Trucking Coalition is working to ensure the Texas economy, small businesses and employers are not harmed by abusive commercial vehicle litigation.
